His works were published only after his death. Varlam Shalamov served his sentence in a labor camp on the Kolyma River, in a polar region of the Russia's North-East. He was sentenced for spreading the word about a letter written by Lenin and addressed to the participants of the Communist Party Congress, where he criticized Stalin. This letter is also known as the "Lenin's will". This sequel is considered by critics and the press as on of the most truthful testimonies about the Soviet regime and Gulag. |
